Full-arch implant recovery, week by week
Clinically reviewed by Shivam S. Patel, DDS, AFAAID · Last reviewed September 27, 2026
The short answer
Most full-arch patients find days 2 and 3 the hardest, when swelling peaks, and are comfortable on over-the-counter pain relievers by the end of the first week. You stay on soft foods until your final teeth are delivered, typically about 3 to 5 months after surgery when implants are placed the same day teeth are removed. Every recovery is different, and your written instructions come first.
The day of surgery
When it’s clinically appropriate, you leave our office with healing teeth attached to your implants the same day. They’re designed for appearance and light function while the implants heal, not for full chewing force.
Expect numbness for several hours, a tight feeling in your face, and some blood-tinged saliva. Rest with your head raised, ice the outside of your face 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, and stick to liquids such as protein shakes and blended soups. Don’t use a straw, spit, or rinse unless we’ve told you to.
Days 1 to 3
We see you the day after surgery for a check. Swelling usually peaks on day 2 or 3, and bruising along the jawline can appear; it looks worse than it is and is part of normal healing. Stay on liquids and purées, keep icing for the first 72 hours, and sleep with your head raised for the first few nights.
Days 4 to 14
Swelling and bruising fade a little each day. By this point most patients are comfortable on over-the-counter pain relievers, and many people with desk jobs are back at work, often after 3 or 4 days. Your diet moves to soft foods, chewed gently on your back teeth. A simple test for the whole healing phase: if you can cut or mash a food with a plastic fork without the fork breaking, it’s safe to eat. Speech usually sounds like your own again within a few days.
Weeks 3 to 8
The diet opens up to an expanded soft range, such as eggs, soft chicken, rice, and cheese, still passing the plastic-fork test. As your gums heal, they change shape, so we see you for short comfort visits to adjust the fit of your healing teeth. Those visits are included in your full-arch fee.
Until your final teeth
This is the quiet stretch: the bone matures around the implants while little changes on the outside. It’s also when patients are most tempted to test harder foods, because everything feels normal. Biting into an apple or eating popcorn now can damage the healing teeth or stress an implant that isn’t ready.
Along the way, you may receive prototype teeth as your bite and appearance are refined. Once integration is confirmed, Dr. Patel takes final records and delivers your final teeth himself: typically about 3 to 5 months after surgery when implants are placed the same day teeth are removed, or about 5 to 6 months when implants are placed after a healing period.
What can slow healing
Smoking and vaping slow healing and raise the risk that an implant won’t integrate. Don’t smoke for at least 2 weeks after surgery, and stopping for good is best. Poorly controlled diabetes also prolongs inflammation. Tell us about either before surgery so we can plan around it.
When to call us
Call (630) 766-0115 for pain that gets worse after day 3 instead of better, swelling that worsens after day 2 or 3 or spreads down the neck, a fever above 101°F, bleeding that doesn’t slow with firm pressure, or healing teeth that feel loose. Our phone line is answered 24/7; after hours, tell our automated receptionist it’s an emergency and your call is forwarded to Dr. Patel. Trouble breathing or swallowing is an emergency: call 911.

FAQ
How long does full-arch implant recovery take?
The first week is the most intense, with swelling peaking on days 2 and 3. Final teeth typically follow about 3 to 5 months after surgery for immediate placement, or about 5 to 6 months when implants are placed after a healing period.
When can I go back to work after full-arch implants?
Many people with desk jobs return after 3 or 4 days. Physically demanding work needs longer; we’ll give you a timeline for your job and can provide a work note.
When can I eat normally again?
After your final teeth are delivered and confirmed. Until then, eat foods you can cut or mash with a plastic fork without the fork breaking; that protects your healing teeth and implants.
